When the Oz skaters tore or took off their old jerseys at the start of Saturday’s Star Pass of Doom bout — to one of the loudest ovations we’ve heard in Crisafulli Rink — it marked the beginning for Port City Roller Derby. Today’s Tuesday Tidbits provide a little more info on the change.
Thanks to: The designer behind the new logo is Nick Machia from ABC Creative. Our own J-Rock-It convinced the Syracuse-based firm where she works to donate their services for a leaguewide logo and two related designs for our A and B teams.
Breaking news: The name of our A team, as unveiled on Saturday night, is the Breakwall Bombshells. The name, suggested by league member Abbie Cadaver, both refers to Oswego’s famed Lake Ontario breakwall as well the importance of establishing and breaking walls of blockers in the sport of roller derby.
Democratic process: Coming up with the new name was truly a team effort. We put the call open to all league members to suggest names for our league and for A and B teams. The marketing/media committees narrowed down 37 suggestions to four league name finalists and five team name finalists. League members voted to determine the winners. The sentiment was high to honor Oswego’s status as the Port City, which is the city’s legacy and historic claim to fame.
Plan B?: Our B team name has been determined, but has yet to be unveiled. Because we’ve decided reveals are fun!
