Over the weekend, we saw some memorably heroic athletic action. Underdogs stepping up to the spotlight, meeting daunting challenges and giving their all in difficult circumstances.
No, not that thing with the football and stuff. We’re talking about the Port City Roller Girls going for the glory (for the gory?) for a third straight year during Warm Up Oswego’s Crazy Costume Sled Race.
With a fivesome dressed as the Princesses of Power, former semi-pro go-kart racer Abbie Cadaver piloted a sled pulled by PCRD members Certified Public Assassin, Insane Assilem, Resilient Jen Hit-Su and … Phil the Camera Guy? Yes, it’s true. Phil stepped in when another member had to cancel, bravely put on a striking dress and made fans of any kind of sport, competition or entertainment proud. We already thought he needs a good derby name … now he may deserve having a street named after him. (Many thanks to SUNY Oswego professor Graham Bradley for the photographic evidence.)
The race did not have a fairy-tale ending, as PCRD got nipped at the wire to wind up in second place. And the Scooby Doo gang with their Mystery Machine sled took best costume honors. But even if the team came away without a prize, an opportunity to support a community festival and to bring some fun, laughter and smiles to everyone is always a winning formula.

I am not sure what I LOVE more about this picture. The giant smile on CPA’s face or Phil’s luscious red hair flowing in the wind.
Great job guys!
