Details: Star Pass of Doom, 6 p.m. Saturday (doors at 5 p.m.) at Crisafulli Rink, East Ninth and Mitchell streets, Oswego.
Tale of the tape:
Team: Oz Roller Girls
League: Oz Roller Girls
Home: Oswego, N.Y.
Record: 7-5
Most recent action: Lost to #25 Capital City Derby Dolls’ Dolly Rogers 234-90 in Ottawa
Team: Assault Squad
League: Assault City Roller Derby
Home: Syracuse, N.Y.
Record: not listed
Most recent action: A sixth-place finish at the statewide Empire Skate Showdown tournament. Assault Squad went 1-2, knocking off the Hellions of Troy before falling to the Gotham Girls’ Wall Street Traitors (the eventual winners) and Suburbia Roller Derby.
Assault charges: Founded in 2007, Assault City is one of the longest-running and most established leagues in Upstate New York. They hit hard, they skate hard and they make it hard on the other team’s jammer. In last year’s season finale, Oz defeated the league’s B team, the Battery Brigade, 145-74. This year, Oz gets ACRD’s A team, the Assault Squad, a major challenge from a seasoned, talented bunch.
Sweet home: Oz comes into the bout with a 4-0 home record on the season and a nine-game winning streak dating to last season. Their last home loss came in June 2011 against Enchanted Mountain Roller Derby’s Hellbilly Heartbreakers, also the only home loss the team has absorbed in its two-year history. But the Assault Squad definitely will test that streak, and then some.
Surprises: We have at least one big surprise for the audience. Yes, that’s called a tease.
Prediction: Two teams with plenty of heart, a lot of pride and a constellation of derby skills will provide an entertaining, hard-fought bout. You should really see it.
